Thanksgiving Travel: What to Expect Now That the Government Shutdown Has Ended

Now that the government shutdown has officially ended, travelers are asking me the same question: “So… does this mean Thanksgiving travel is back to normal?” The short answer is: we’re getting there, but there are still a few things you should be ready for as you finalize your holiday plans.

Even with the government back up and running, the FAA’s temporary flight-capacity reductions are still in place. As of today, airlines are operating with a 6% cut in flights at several major airports—most notably across the Northeast corridor. The important news is that those cuts will not increase to 10%, which was the scenario everyone feared if the shutdown dragged on. So while we’re not fully back to pre-shutdown schedules, we also avoided the worst-case holiday crunch.

So what does this mean for Thanksgiving week?

Here’s the real-world impact travelers should expect:

1. Fewer flights mean fuller flights.
With the 6% reduction still active, don’t expect wide-open cabins. Planes will be full, standby lists will be long, and last-minute fares may creep up.

2. Delays will still happen — but fewer pre-emptive cancellations.
During the shutdown, airlines were trimming schedules early. Now that the shutdown is over, we’ll see fewer of those cuts. Delays, however, are still likely simply because the system is tight and demand is huge.

3. Connections will have less wiggle room.
A slightly reduced schedule means fewer backup options. Build extra time into your travel day, especially if you’re connecting through busy hubs like Newark, JFK, LaGuardia, Boston, or D.C.

4. TSA and air traffic control staffing are stabilizing.
The shutdown pause slowed hiring and training pipelines, but now the flow resumes. That said, don’t expect instant relief. Arrive early—especially during the peak Wednesday-Sunday window.

Bottom Line

The end of the shutdown is absolutely a step in the right direction, and the fact that we’re holding at a 6% cut instead of jumping to 10% is a huge win for holiday travelers. Just pack your patience, plan ahead, and give yourself some breathing room on travel days. Thanksgiving will be busy—no surprise there—but the situation is far better than it could’ve been.
